RENAWO Renovations

How We Work

Our Renovation Process

A well-run renovation follows a clear, predictable sequence. Here is how RENAWO guides your project from the first conversation to the day you settle into your finished space.

Why Process Matters

Fewer Surprises, Better Decisions

Most renovation stress comes from the same few sources: unclear scope, decisions made in a rush, poor communication and work that has to be redone. A clear process addresses each of them. It gives you time to think, gives us the information we need to plan properly and gives everyone a shared understanding of what happens next.

Our process has eight stages. The early stages are about listening and planning; the middle stages are about preparing and building carefully; the final stages are about checking the work and handing over a space you are comfortable with. The exact length of each stage depends on the size and complexity of your project.

Step 01

Initial Consultation

Every project begins with a conversation. We want to understand what is prompting the renovation, what frustrates you about the current space, how your household uses it day to day and what you hope will feel different when the work is done. We also talk openly about timing and the budget range you are comfortable with, because those two factors shape every recommendation that follows.

This first discussion is not a sales pitch. It is a chance for both sides to understand whether the project is a good fit, what the likely scope looks like and what the sensible next steps are. If your ideas are still forming, that is completely normal; part of our role is helping you turn a general wish list into clear priorities.

What you can expect

An honest discussion of your goals, a first sense of scope and clear next steps.

What we need from you

Your goals, rough timing, a budget range and any photos or inspiration you have gathered.

Step 02

Project Discovery

Next, we look closely at the existing conditions. A site visit lets us see the space in person, take measurements and note the things that affect planning: structure, plumbing and electrical locations, ventilation, access, flooring transitions and the condition of what is behind the finishes wherever that can be assessed. Older GTA homes in particular can hold surprises, and the more we learn early, the fewer we meet later.

Discovery is also where we refine priorities with you. We talk through which elements are essential, which are nice to have and where there may be trade-offs between layout changes, material choices and budget. This step lays the factual groundwork for a realistic plan.

What you can expect

A thorough walk-through of your home, accurate measurements and candid feedback on what is feasible.

What we need from you

Access to the spaces involved, any existing drawings or past renovation records, and your must-have list.

Step 03

Planning & Design

With the facts in hand, we develop the plan. That includes the layout, the functional details such as storage, lighting and circulation, and the direction for materials and finishes. We work through design questions before construction rather than during it, because decisions made on site under time pressure are rarely the best ones.

Planning also covers the practical side: sequencing the work, identifying items with longer lead times and reviewing whether permits or engineering input may be needed. Permit requirements are set by your municipality, and structural, plumbing, electrical or new-living-space work commonly needs one while cosmetic updates often do not. We review those needs for your specific project during this stage.

What you can expect

A resolved layout, a clear design direction and a realistic view of sequencing and approvals.

What we need from you

Timely feedback on layouts and selections, and decisions on the items that affect the plan.

Step 04

Scope & Proposal

Once the plan is settled, we prepare a defined scope of work and proposal. It sets out what is included, what is excluded, which selections are confirmed and which allowances remain open. The goal is a document you can read and understand, so you know exactly what you are agreeing to before work begins.

This is the right moment to ask questions and to compare options. If a particular finish or feature is pushing the budget, we can discuss alternatives that protect the overall result. Clarity at this stage prevents most of the misunderstandings that make renovations stressful.

What you can expect

A clear, itemized scope and an opportunity to review and adjust it with us.

What we need from you

A careful read of the proposal, your questions and your approval of the final scope.

Step 05

Preparation

Good renovations are won before demolition starts. During preparation we confirm the schedule, order materials, coordinate trades and arrange any required permits. Ordering long-lead items early, such as cabinetry, custom glass or specialty fixtures, helps keep the project moving once it is underway.

We also plan how the work will fit around your household. That means agreeing on working hours, access, where materials will be staged, which areas will be protected and how dust and noise will be managed. If you will be living at home during the renovation, this planning makes a real difference to daily life.

What you can expect

A confirmed start date, a protection plan for your home and an outline of the schedule.

What we need from you

Final selections confirmed, rooms cleared of personal items and any household logistics shared with us.

Step 06

Renovation

Construction proceeds in a planned sequence: protection and demolition, then rough-in work such as framing, plumbing and electrical, followed by inspections where required, insulation and drywall, and finally the finishing trades. Each phase builds on the one before it, so we pay close attention to the quality of the work that will eventually be hidden.

Throughout the build, you will receive regular updates on progress, upcoming milestones and any decisions that need your input. If we uncover something unexpected behind a wall or under a floor, we explain what we found, the options for addressing it and how they affect scope and timing, before moving ahead.

What you can expect

Organized, protected work areas, steady progress and regular communication.

What we need from you

Prompt responses when decisions are needed and a single point of contact on your side.

Step 07

Quality Review

Before we consider the work complete, we review it against the agreed scope and our own standards. We look at alignment, finish quality, transitions, caulking and grout lines, hardware operation and the many small details that determine how a space feels once it is in use.

Anything that needs refinement is addressed at this stage. Our aim is that by the time you see the finished space for the walkthrough, it has already been checked carefully and is ready for you to enjoy.

What you can expect

A detailed internal review and refinement of any items that need attention.

What we need from you

Patience for this final pass, which is what turns a finished room into a refined one.

Step 08

Final Walkthrough

Finally, we walk through the finished space together. We review the work, show you how fixtures, appliances and systems operate, and share care and maintenance guidance for the materials in your home. This is also your opportunity to point out anything you would like us to look at again.

Once any final items are resolved, the project is closed out and the space is yours. Our hope is that the renovation feels as good months later as it does on the first day, because it was planned and built to be lived in.

What you can expect

A thorough walkthrough, practical care guidance and a clean, finished space.

What we need from you

Your time for the walkthrough and honest feedback on anything you want reviewed.

Practical Tips

Living Through a Renovation

Many homeowners stay at home while work is underway. With a little preparation, daily life can carry on more comfortably than you might expect.

  • Set up a temporary zone. For a kitchen renovation, a small station with a microwave, kettle, toaster oven and a few dishes in another room makes the weeks much easier.
  • Clear the work area early. Pack and move personal items, artwork and fragile pieces from the renovation area and nearby rooms before the start date.
  • Plan for dust and noise. Protection and containment help, but some dust and noise are unavoidable. Plan quiet work or calls away from the active area when you can.
  • Think about pets and children. Decide in advance where they will spend the day and keep work areas off limits.
  • Keep one communication channel. Agree on how updates and questions will be shared so nothing gets lost.
  • Build in flexibility. Hidden conditions or delayed deliveries can shift dates. A modest contingency in your budget and schedule reduces stress if they do.

FAQ

Questions About Our Process

It depends on the size of the project and how quickly selections are made. A single bathroom is usually quicker to plan than a full home renovation with layout changes. We will give you a realistic sense of the planning timeline after the initial consultation and discovery visit.

Many homeowners do, particularly for single-room projects. For larger or whole-home renovations, staying elsewhere for part of the project can be more comfortable. We discuss this during preparation and plan protection and access around your household either way.

Depending on the scope of work, a permit may be required. Requirements are set by your municipality: structural, plumbing, electrical and new-living-space work commonly needs one, while cosmetic updates often do not. RENAWO reviews permit needs for your project during planning and builds any required approvals into the schedule. See our permits guide for more background.

We stop and explain what we found, the options for addressing it and how each option affects scope, cost and timing. Nothing proceeds outside the agreed scope without your approval.

You will receive regular updates on progress, upcoming milestones and decisions that need your input. We agree on the communication method at the start of the project so you always know where to look.
